Can I claim uni courses on tax while working from home?
Sometimes, where the course has a sufficient connection to your current employment when you incur the expense. Studying online at home does not by itself make a university course deductible. The ATO looks at the connection to your present duties or income from those activities. ATO: self-education eligibility.
General information for Australian employees. Official sources checked 6 September 2026. Check the rules for your claim year and ask a registered tax agent where your circumstances need individual advice.
Current work or a new occupation?
Training that maintains or improves skills used in your current duties can meet the connection test. Study to get initial employment or enter a new occupation generally does not. Some courses need a subject-by-subject review rather than a yes-or-no decision for the whole degree. ATO: course connection and apportionment.
Keep the syllabus and a short explanation linking the relevant subjects to actual tasks in your role. A course name such as “business” or “technology” is not the explanation.
HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP are different
- Commonwealth-supported student contributions: fees associated with HECS-HELP are not deductible, including when paid upfront.
- Eligible full-fee study: tuition fees can potentially be deductible when the self-education conditions are met, including where payment is deferred through FEE-HELP.
- Loan repayments: compulsory or voluntary repayments of HELP and other study-support loans are not deductible.
Check your enrolment type and the date the expense is incurred. The ATO distinguishes incurring a qualifying course fee from later repaying its loan. ATO: tuition fees and study loans.
Keep a review record for each fee
In The Paper Keep, save genuine course-payment receipts under Professional learning for review. Tag their line items current-role-study and eligibility-review, then note the subject, work connection, enrolment type and any employer reimbursement.
Keep enrolment notices, census-date information, course outlines and loan statements with your separate tax working papers. A deferred fee may be incurred without a paid receipt: do not invent a receipt or assume the app’s receipt date settles the tax year.
What about the laptop and home bills?
Eligible study-related equipment or running costs need their own review. Do not count a laptop twice because it supports both employment and study. Merely attending classes at home is not permission to enter all study hours as employment WFH hours.
The Paper Keep’s WFH estimator is a work-from-home model, not a test of university-course eligibility or a dedicated self-education calculator. Use the ATO’s guidance for study costs and keep those calculations separate where needed. ATO: other self-education expenses.
Prepare for tax review, not just a category total
Leave the category’s Tax deductible flag off until you resolve the treatment. Export receipt notes and tags for review, but reconcile them against fee notices and loan records. The app will not distinguish HECS-HELP from FEE-HELP just because an item has a study tag.
For equipment, read the laptop guide. For a checklist around your existing role, start with the occupation guides.
