A receipt detail page showing the red Processing failed banner with a Retry processing button
A failed receipt — the banner explains what went wrong and offers a one-click retry.

How you'll notice

  • The receipt shows a red Failed status badge in the receipts list and on its detail page.
  • The detail page shows a "Processing failed" banner at the top, including the error message when one is available.
  • The Queue page lists failed jobs with their error and attempt count.

The original file is always stored safely before any processing starts — a failure only means the automatic extraction didn't finish, never that your receipt is gone.

Retry processing

  1. Open the failed receipt from your receipts list.
  2. Click Retry processing in the red banner at the top.
  3. The receipt is re-queued — you'll see "Retry queued — the receipt will be reprocessed shortly." and the status returns to processing.

A retry keeps everything you've already filled in: any parsed details, your category, notes, and tags are preserved. Processing picks up again from the failed step.

Retrying requires an active subscription, since reprocessing uses AI parsing.

Watching the queue

The Queue page shows what The Paper Keep is working on:

  • Status counts — pending, processing, failed, and completed jobs.
  • Hourly pace — receipts are processed at a steady rate (60/hour normally, faster during a first inbox import). Large imports queue up and drain automatically.
  • Weekly usage — if your account has a weekly quota, the page shows how much of it is used.
  • Active jobs — each queued job with its type, status, attempts, and any error.

Failed jobs are retried automatically a few times with increasing delays before they give up. The Retry processing button is for receipts that have exhausted those automatic attempts.

If retrying doesn't help

  • Unreadable original — if the photo is blurry or the PDF is corrupt, retry will fail again. Open the receipt and fill in the vendor, date, and total manually via Edit; your entered details work everywhere search and reports do.
  • Wrong file — if the wrong document was ingested, delete the receipt and upload the right one.
